Vayishlach: Rishon
Vayishlach – Rishon Vayishlach – Rishon Vayishlach – Rishon Im Lavan Garti You may recall that Yaakov left home because his brother Eisav was out to kill him. Now that he was returning, Yaakov took appropriate steps to prepare for the reunion. He turned to G-d for help, he sent gifts in the hopes of appeasing Eisav, and he prepared for battle. Yaakov sent messengers to Eisav with instructions to tell him, “I lived with Lavan until now and I have become very wealthy, so I am sending word to make peace.” (Rashi cites a Midrash that the word “garti” – “I lived” – is an anagram of Taryag – the 613 mitzvos. Yaakov was saying that even in Lavan’s house he adhered to the principles of Torah and did not copy his father-in-law’s ways.) The messengers sent back word that Eisav was en route to meet Yaakov – with 400 of his men! Fearing the worst, Yaakov divided his household into two separate camps so that if Eisav would attack one, the other could flee. Finally, Yaakov prayed to G-d. He recognized that he had not earned all of the kindness G-d had shown him; nevertheless, He asked G-d to save him from Eisav so that He might fulfill His promise to increase Yaakov’s descendants. HaShoneh Halachos for Sun, Nov 22, 2015
136. False Witnesses, Passing Travelers 136. False Witnesses, Passing TravelersHaShoneh Halachos for Sunday, November 22, 2015 Avodas Kochavim 4:8 If the witnesses who testified that a city had turned to idolatry were later found to be lying, then whoever took property from the city has acquired it and may benefit from it. This is because the judgment that prohibited the property has been nullified. The new owners acquire the property because the residents of the city gave up possession when judgment was rendered. A condemned city may never be rebuilt. If one rebuilds it, he is liable to the penalty of lashes as per Deuteronomy 13:17, “never to be rebuilt.” This only prohibits rebuilding it as a city; it may be used for gardens and orchards. Avodas Kochavim 4:9 If a traveling caravan passes through city that is being led astray and they are led astray along with the city’s inhabitants, then if they remain in the city for 30 days, they are executed by decapitation and their property is condemned. If they were there for a shorter period of time, they are executed by stoning and their property is turned over to their heirs. By Rabbi Jack AbramowitzProvided for informational purposes only. Aish.com Daily - 10 Kislev
Daily Email Form Torah Reading: Vayishlach 10 Kislev 5776 / November 22, 2015 DAILY LIFT TODAY IN JEWISH HISTORY GROWING EACH DAY ASK THE RABBI QUOTE PHOTO Print Entire Mailing #537 Write The Story Of Your Life Print Version » Write The Story Of Your Life View each day as a page in your autobiography. You have the ability to fill each page with beautiful stories of spiritual growth and kind deeds. Past pages are already written, but you can revise their significance by learning from your mistakes. In a panoramic view of your life, those mistakes become stepping stones for growth. Future pages are not yet ready to be written. Only the present pages are before you. You have the opportunity to be the author of a masterpiece which describes the life of a great person: you. (Rabbi Yechezkel Abramsky; Rabbi Pliskin's Gateway to Happiness, p.152) See Rabbi Pliskin's new book "Self-Confidence" Kislev 10 Print Version » In 1977, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat addressed the Knesset in Jerusalem. Sadat was the first Arab leader to officially visit Israel, after receiving an invitation from Menachem Begin. Sadat had orchestrated the Egyptian attack on Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, but after suffering defeat became resigned to the existence of the State of Israel. Much of the Arab world was outraged by Sadat's visit and his change of strategy. One year later, Sadat and Begin signed the Camp David Peace Agreement, for which they received the Nobel Peace Prize. As part of the deal, Israel withdrew from the Sinai peninsula in phases, returning the entire area to Egypt by 1983. Kislev 10 Print Version » Train a young lad according to his method, so that when he grows older he will not deviate from it (Proverbs 22:6). He shall not deviate from it - the child will not deviate from the method with which he was taught. That method refers to the way we are taught to adapt to life's many hurdles, struggles, and tests. Education consists of more than just imparting knowledge; it also means training and preparation in how to deal with life. Knowledge is certainly important, but is by no means the sum total of education. "A person does not properly grasp a Torah principle unless he errs in it" (Gittin 43b). People usually do not really grasp anything unless they first do it wrong. In fact, the hard way is the way to learn. Children learn to walk by stumbling and picking themselves up; young people learn to adjust to life by stumbling and picking themselves up. Parents and teachers have ample opportunities to serve as role models for their children and students, to demonstrate how to adapt to mistakes and failures. If we show our children and students only our successes, but conceal our failures from them, we deprive them of the most valuable learning opportunities. We should not allow our egos to interfere with our roles as educators. Parents and teachers fulfill their obligations when they become role models for real life. Today I shall ... try to share with others, especially with younger people, how I have overcome and survived my mistakes.See more books by Rabbi Abraham Twerski at Artscroll.com Kislev 10 Print Version » Buying German Products I’ve heard the argument made that Jews should not buy German products, for example Volkswagen cars which used Jewish slave labor during the war. It is wrong for Jews to support German industries? My cousin says we should just forgive and forget. I would like your thoughts on the subject. The Aish Rabbi Replies: The great rabbi known as the Chazon Ish once said that if a Torah scroll was found burning, and a man used it to light his cigarette, there is no Jewish law that forbids it. Nevertheless, doing so would show a lack of sensitivity. So too, Jewish law does not forbid purchasing a German car. Regarding the "demand for forgiveness," people often quote the Bible that when one is struck, it is proper to "turn the other cheek" and allow that cheek to be struck as well. But that only appears in the Christian Bible. Jews believe in fighting actively against evil. Almost all people are inherently good and so we should forgive their lapses. But some people are truly evil – for example, Amalek, the ancient nation which wantonly attacked the Jews leaving Egypt. Over two millennia ago when Haman (a descendant of Amalek) was commanded by the king to lead his enemy Mordechai through the streets of Shushan, Mordechai was too weak to climb on to the horse. Haman had to stoop to allow Mordechai to use his back as a stepping stool. In the process, Mordechai delivered a vicious kick to Haman which obviously startled him. Turning to Mordechai in bewilderment, Haman asked: "Does it not say in your Bible, 'Do not rejoice at your enemy's downfall?'" Mordechai responded that indeed it does, but it refers only to people less evil than Haman. So too, we have no reason or allowance to forgive the Nazis and their helpers. Those who scraped the concrete in the gas chambers gasping for air can choose whether to forgive the Germans. We cannot. Vayishlach: Sheini
Vayishlach – Sheini Vayishlach – Sheini Vayishlach – Sheini "What Do You Want to Know THAT For?" Yaakov prepared a gift for Eisav. There were hundreds of animals of various species, which he separated into herds. He sent each herd separately, with a different servant, each of whom was to tell Eisav that it was a gift from Yaakov, who was coming up behind them. He sent the herds ahead, then led his two camps to safety, across the river. After that, Yaakov was all alone, when he encountered Eisav’s “guardian angel.” They wrestled until dawn, when the angel saw he couldn’t win. He touched Yaakov in the hip and dislocated it. The angel then asked to be released, since he had to attend to his morning duties. Yaakov told the angel that he would not release him until the angel blessed him. The angel blessed him by changing his name to Yisroel (Israel), meaning that he had prevailed in his struggles with both man and G-d. Yaakov asked the angel to reveal HIS name, but the angel said, “What do you want to know THAT for?” The angel blessed him and left. You may be wondering how an angel gets the authority to rename Yaakov. Don’t worry; G-d ratifies this name change Himself, in the fifth aliyah. Nach Yomi: II Chronicles 12
II Chronicles – Chapter 12II Chronicles – Chapter 12 II Chronicles – Chapter 12 Shishak Attack Rechavam started out a righteous (if flawed) king, but once he felt secure in his reign, he became full of himself and turned his back on G-d. In the fifth year of his reign, Shishak, king of Egypt, waged war against Jerusalem. They brought 1,200 chariots, 60,000 horsemen and countless troops. He captured Rechavam’s strongholds and proceeded to Jerusalem. The prophet Shmayah came to Rechavam and the other leaders who had gathered in Jerusalem. He told them that G-d was letting Shishak win because Rechavam and his officers had turned their backs on Him. The king and his men acknowledged that G-d was right and they humbled themselves before Him. Because of this, G-d softened the decree: Shishak would not destroy Jerusalem, but Judah would become a vassal state to Egypt. Shishak arrived and plundered the treasures of the Temple, as well as the gold shields Solomon had made and other valuables. Rechavam replaced the gold shields with copper and gave them to the officers in charge of his escort. (The gold shields were stationary, remaining in the palace; the copper replacements were mobile, accompanying the king.) Because Rechavam humbled himself, and because things weren’t all bad in Judah, the punishment was mitigated. Rechavam reigned for 17 years; the middle of his reign was evil, but the start and end weren’t so bad. However, Rechavam and Yeravam were in a perpetual state of war. When Rechavam died, he was succeeded by his son, Aviya. Recycling NGC 5291 Following an ancient galaxy-galaxy collision 200 million light-years from Earth, debris from a gas-rich galaxy, NGC 5291, was flung far into intergalactic space. Stretched along the 100,000 light-year long tidal tails, are clumps resembling dwarf galaxies, but lacking old stars, apparently dominated by young stars and active star forming regions. I’d like to get to know you better
And I am inviting you to tell us which issues are most important to you. Phillip, We started this journey, not in October 2015, but three years ago with a very old-fashioned strategy. We met and talked with as many Canadians as we could. And we listened. You built this platform. You built this movement. You told us what you need to be successful. You told us what kind of government you want, and we built the plan to make it happen. In coffee shops and town halls, in church basements and in gurdwaras, you gathered. You spent time, together, with us. And you told us about the kind of country you want to build and leave to your children. And together, one community at a time, powered by the tireless dedication of over 80,000 volunteers, and the generosity of Canadians like you, we earned the chance to bring real change to Canada. Now we start a new journey. One in which your voice is important. And I’d like the chance to get to know you better. That’s why I am inviting you to tell us which issues are most important to you. November 9, 2015 Follow Us: Important Supporters of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi celebrate as they hear the first official results of the national election. Source: Getty Opposition Set for Big Victory in Myanmar The people have spoken. After the country's first open election in 25 years, the opposition National League for Democracy, fronted by activist Aung San Suu Kyi, says it's confident of victory. So far, official results are only in for 12 seats, all for the NLD, which needs to win two-thirds of all seats for a majority. Myanmar's constitution bars those with foreign children from being president, making Suu Kyi ineligible. Though her party will likely nominate someone else to the post, she insists she'll be "above the president." Sources: BBC, ABC Share: Bibi Comes to Washington to Meet With Obama Can they play nicely? They famously don't get along and have disagreed publicly about major initiatives like Iran's nuclear deal. But this morning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrives at the White House for talks with Obama on Tehran, U.S. aid to Israel and a new security agreement. Many hope their first meeting in over a year will lead to warmer relations, with the administration downplaying personal misgivings in favor of national security. But one Israeli newspaper suggested it was like a bitter couple making final "arrangements before the divorce." Sources: NYT, AFP Share: Violence Erupts at Australian Detention Center They weren't feeling very welcome. Asylum seekers on Christmas Island, a remote outpost 1,650 miles northwest of Perth, have ripped down fences and lit fires at the facility following news that an escaped Iranian detainee's body had been found. Guards at the camp, where irregular migrants and New Zealanders with revoked visas are processed, have been evacuated for their security. Officials say they are working to resolve the "tense" situation, but rioters have reportedly armed themselves with bats and poles to thwart any attempts at retaking the compound. Sources: BBC, DW Share: Saudi Arabia Has No Plans to Limit Oil Supply They're happy to watch prices slide. Riyadh is determined to maintain its global market share by continuing to pump enough oil to meet consumer demand. Saudi officials say this approach - which has seen the price per barrel plummet from $115 to $50 over the past year - will revive demand and restore $70-80 prices within a few years. Those with investments on hold owing to the glut won't be thrilled, but it looks like OPEC's December meeting will do little to grease the wheels of change. (Newsweek) INTRIGUING Straight-Laced Myanmar Enjoys Sexual Revolution They're rolling their stockings down. A deeply conservative military junta ruled Myanmar until 2010, but today the state is opening up to tourism and democracy, holding its first general election in 25 years this weekend. The changes are ushering in modernity: Couples now show affection in public, an LGBT scene is emerging, some teens are becoming sexually active and women are challenging strict gender roles. An influx of foreigners and money to the cities - not to mention pop groups like Me N Ma Girls - are helping Myanmar's traditional social conventions evolve. Sources: OZY Share: Snapchat Surges to 6.2 Billion Daily Views That was fast. The video messaging app known for texts that disappear within seconds has experienced exponential growth over the past year, increasing its daily usage by three times in just six months. The new numbers could put the 4-year-old company within reach of major players like Facebook. Experts pin the growth on new features like Stories, a rolling compilation of snaps from the past day that friends can see. Combined with a focus on integrating major advertisers, the ephemeral novelty app now looks like it has real staying power. Sources: The Verge Share: Sierra Leone Is Officially Ebola-Free It's the picture of health. The world's worst Ebola outbreak ravaged the West African nation for 19 long months, racking up 8,704 infections and 3,589 deaths. Sierra Leone had never reported a case of Ebola before 2014, and its infrastructure was poorly prepared to deal with the scourge. But an immense international effort has paid off, with the World Health Organization declaring over the weekend that Sierra Leone is free of the disease. Now all eyes turn to Guinea, where three new Ebola cases arose last month. Sources: The Atlantic Share: John Lennon's Guitar Sells for $2.4 Million Baby, you're a rich man. When amateur musician John McCaw paid $275 for the Gibson J-160E in the late 1960s he had no idea of its history. Lennon's acoustic guitar, which had been used to record Beatles hits like "Love Me Do," had been missing since 1963. Its whereabouts remained unknown for decades until McCaw realized what he had. Now an anonymous buyer has snapped up the six-string for one of the highest-ever rock memorabilia auction prices, and half the cash goes to Lennon's Spirit Foundation. Sources: Daily Mail , Digital Spy Share: Missouri Players Boycott Football, Join Campus Activists They're refusing to play ball. More than 30 African-American players - notably supported by their coach - have thrown their weight behind a protest calling for Mizzou President Tim Wolfe to resign. Critics say he hasn't done enough to address racial discrimination at the school, where Black enrollment constituted just 7 percent of 35,000 students last year. Wolfe says he's "dedicated to ongoing dialogue." But the Tigers' action has bolstered campus unity while putting Mizzou's sporting profits at risk, which is bound to add pressure for Wolfe to step down. Daily Email Form Torah Reading: Toldot 27 Cheshvan 5776 / November 9, 2015 DAILY LIFT TODAY IN JEWISH HISTORY GROWING EACH DAY ASK THE RABBI QUOTE PHOTO Print Entire Mailing #524 Maintain a Positive Focus Print Version » When you consult someone to increase your happiness, know what you want, and ask for it. It's common to ask for what one doesn't want. "I don't want to be depressed." "I don't want to be so miserable." This way you might end up speaking more about depression and misery than on mastering joy. You might need to discuss the roots and causes in order to change what can be changed. But keep your main focus on joy, happiness, and self-mastery. If this is what you really want, keep your focus on what you can do in thought and deed to create it. (From Rabbi Pliskin's "Happiness",p.120) See Rabbi Pliskin's new book "Self-Confidence" Cheshvan 27 Print Version » In 2104 BCE (1657 from Creation), as the Flood waters finally subsided, Noah, his family and the animals left the Ark. On this day, God commanded them to repopulate and resettle the earth. Cheshvan 27 Print Version » If a person has an equal number of mitzvos and sins, he is given the opportunity to repent until Yom Kippur. If he repents, he is inscribed for life; but if not, he is inscribed for death (Maimonides, Teshuvah 3:3). Why should people be condemned if, by Yom Kippur, their mitzvos still equal their sins? If the two exactly balance each other, should they not be judged with mercy? Rabbi Yisrael of Salant said that the answer is obvious. If people are given the opportunity to repent for their sins, yet still fail to do so, their negligence is a sin so terrible that it outweighs all the mitzvos. While people cannot justify their sins, they can say that the intensity of temptation was overwhelming. As one Chassidic master pleaded, "Almighty God, if You had placed the terrors of Gehinnom before people's eyes and had concealed temptation in books, I swear to You that no one would sin. But You put temptation right before people's eyes and relegated the terrors of Gehinnom to the books, where it exists as an abstraction! Is it any wonder that people sin?" Still, once the sin has been committed and the temptation assuaged, what justification can there be for not regretting that one has done wrong? Hence, said Rabbi Yisrael of Salant, the seriousness of a failure to repent. Sin may stem from an inherent weakness; neglect to rectify past wrongs constitutes an act of defiance and an attitude of unforgivable, arrogant self-righteousness which cannot be forgiven. Today I shall ... make a reckoning of things I have done, and have the courage to recognize and admit what I have done wrong. See more books by Rabbi Abraham Twerski at Artscroll.com Cheshvan 27 Print Version » What are Tzitzit? I recently visited Israel and saw the men praying with prayer shawls. What was that exactly? The Aish Rabbi Replies: The Torah says: "Speak to the children of Israel and tell them to make tzitzit fringes on the corners of their garments, throughout their generations." (Numbers 15:37-41) Tzitzit must be attached to any four-cornered garment. However, people today generally don't wear a four-cornered garment (except for maybe the occasional poncho). So in order to fulfill the mitzvah we have a special four-cornered garment called a tallit. There are two basic types: A Tallit Godol is a large garment that looks like a cloak, and is worn when men pray in the morning. The Tallit Katan is much smaller, usually worn all day long underneath one's shirt. The tzitzit themselves consist of four strings (doubled over into eight), and then tied in a special way to all four corners of the garment. From the moment one dons the tzitzit, until the end of the day when he takes them off, he is involved in a mitzvah! In this way, the tzitzit provide an anchor to the world of spirituality while going about our daily chores. Whether in the work place or in an amusement park, one can always look at his Tzitzit and get in touch with G-d, Torah, and his mission as a Jew. Just how do the Tzitzit remind us of this? The numerical value of "tzitzit" is 600. Add to that the 5 knots and 8 strings on each corner, and you get the number 613, which is the total number of mitzvot in the Torah. (Rashi - Numbers 15:39) To learn more, read "Tzitzith" by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan. Nach Yomi: I Chronicles 28
I Chronicles – Chapter 28I Chronicles – Chapter 28 I Chronicles – Chapter 28 It's Divinely Inspired, Okay? David called a gathering of the leaders of the people and his officials. Though he was old and infirm, he rose to address them. “Listen, my brothers,” he said. “I intended to build a Temple to G-d but I was denied the privilege. But G-d selected me as king and He has granted me an eternal dynasty with Solomon succeeding me. It is Solomon who will build G-d’s Temple. Now I charge all of you with pursuing G-d’s commandments and doing His will so that your descendants will be able to reside in our land forever. And you, Solomon, serve G-d wholeheartedly. If you seek Him, He will be there for you. If you abandon Him, you’ll never see Him again. Fulfill His word to build the Temple.” David then gave Solomon the blueprints for various parts the Temple. These plans were Divinely revealed and were immutable. David also gave Solomon the various work rotations he had drawn up, which were apparently also Divinely inspired. David turned over to Solomon control of all the resources he had stockpiled, as well as instructions as to what was to be made with them. All the instructions that G-d had given were written down and David handed them over to Solomon. (It’s not entirely clear to whom G-d gave the plans for the Temple – Moses? Samuel? Nathan? David himself? But whenever – and to whomever – G-d revealed them, this chapter makes abundantly clear that the design of the Temple is of Divine origin.) Solomon was encouraged by his father to strengthen himself and to persevere in building G-d’s Temple. If he did this, David said, G-d would be with him throughout the project.
