Working to Prevent a Nuclear-Armed Iran: Lobbying Legislators

OUA Update 081215 Take Action: Urge Congress to Reject the Bad Deal     Advocacy in our Communities: District Meetings with Members of Congress Legislators have told us that their decision on the Iran deal will be one of the most important decisions they will ever make. We must make our voice heard about this bad deal that paves a pathway to a nuclear-armed Iran. Over the course of Congress' August recess, OU Advocacy has been coordinating constituent meetings and events with Members of Congress to discuss our concerns about the nuclear deal with Iran and urge our Members to reject the deal. Below is a round-up of our recent meetings: New York Congresswoman Kathleen Rice, August 4   A delegation of community leaders met with U.S. Representative Kathleen Rice to thank her for publicly opposing the nuclear deal with Iran and to discuss their concerns about the deal. During the meeting, Rep. Rice expressed her concerns about the lack of "anytime, anywhere" inspections in the deal. Rep. Rice announced she will vote against the deal. Town Hall with Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, August 11   More than 500 Brooklyn residents attended Congressman Hakeem Jeffries' "town hall meeting and listening session" about the Iran nuclear deal, hosted by AIPAC and co-sponsored by the Orthodox Union, Agudath Israel of America and other organizations. Congressman Jeffries told the crowd that Senator Schumer's opposition to the deal has been very valuable to him as he continues to review and evaluate the deal, and determine how he will vote. OU CEO Allen Fagin joined other key community leaders for a more intimate meeting and conversation with Rep. Jeffries last week. Town Hall with Congresswoman Grace Meng, August 18   Congresswoman Grace Meng held a town hall meeting at the Young Israel of Hillcrest to discuss the Iran nuclear deal. The event, which was co-sponsored by the OU, drew a full house of community members who came to hear the Congresswoman and thank her for opposing the deal. New Jersey Congressman Donald Norcross, August 17    The OU co-sponsored a meeting of Cherry Hill community members with Congressman Donald Norcross. During the meeting, the Congressman announced his opposition to the bill, to great applause. Senator Cory Booker, August 20    Hundreds of people joined OU Advocacy for a conference call with Senator Cory Booker, who discussed his concerns about the flaws in the Iran deal and his deliberations in making a decision. Congressman Bill Pascrell, August 27   The OU participated in a meeting at East Hill Synagogue with Congressman Bill Pascrell and community leaders from the Englewood Jewish community. Congressman Frank Pallone, August 31    The OU is one of the organizers of a small community meeting of constituents from Edison and Highland Park who will meet with Congressman Frank Pallone on Monday, August 31. Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, August 24   A delegation of synagogue and community leaders met with U.S. Senator Ben Cardin to discuss their concerns about the deal and encourage the Senator to oppose the deal. Senator Cardin committed to announce his position in early September. Congressman John Delaney, August 27   OU Advocacy hosted a community meeting with Rep. John Delaney at Beth Sholom Congregation in Potomac. More than 400 people turned out and engaged with the Congressman on the issue. Ambassador Dennis Ross gave introductory remarks outlining the pros and cons of the proposed agreement. California Congressman Ted Lieu, August 18   A delegation of Los Angeles-area synagogue and community leaders, led by OU West Coast director Alan Kalinsky, met with U.S. Representative Ted Lieu to urge him to oppose the nuclear deal with Iran. During the meeting, the group noted the significant concerns the Los Angeles Iranian Jewish community--the largest in the country--has about the deal.Click here to email Yehuda Friedman from OU's Synagogue Services if you are interested in participating in an upcoming meeting with a legislator. Stand Against a Nuclear-Armed Iran on Sept 9 The OU is bringing hundreds of our communities' rabbis and shul leaders to Washington to show Congress that we are united against the Iran deal. Please join your rabbis and national OU leaders on Wed. Sept. 9 at 12:15 p.m. on Capitol Hill (on the North side of the Capitol) and help amplify our collective voice as we urge our Representatives and Senators to reject the deal. Take Action: Urge Congress to Reject the Bad Deal Thousands of people have reached out to their Members of Congress to urge them to vote against the Iran deal. Put your name on that list. Take Action Today. Click here to send this critically important email to your legislators. Phone calls are valued highly by Members of Congress. HaShoneh Halachos for Mon, Aug 31, 2015

53. Healthy Habits 53. Healthy HabitsHaShoneh Halachos for Monday, August 31, 2015 Deios 4:1 Maintaining a healthy and fit body is part of a person’s service of God because one cannot pursue knowledge of his Creator when he is sick. Therefore, a person must avoid things that harm the body and he must accustom himself to things that are healthy and make the body strong. Specifically, a person should only eat when he is hungry and drink when he is thirsty. One should not delay relieving his bladder or bowels, even for a moment. Rather, when he feels the need, he should attend to it right away. Deios 4:2 A person should not eat until he is full. Rather, he should only eat until he is about three-quarters full. One should drink only a little water during a meal, mixed with wine. When food begins to be digested in one’s intestines, he should drink what is necessary. One should not drink too much water, even when his food has been digested. One should not eat until he has made sure that he doesn’t need to relieve himself. Before eating, one should take a walk or engage in some other exercise to raise his body temperature. One should engage in a sweat-inducing form of exercise each morning, after which he should rest a little and then eat. Bathing in hot water after exercise is a good thing to do. One should wait for a little while and then eat. Editor’s note: The Rambam lived in the 12th century and his medical advice incorporates the best knowledge of his day. Ki Savo: Shlishi

Ki Tavo – ShlishiKi Tavo – Shlishi Ki Tavo – Shlishi There Will Be a Brief Intermission Before the Next Speech Moshe ends his second discourse by urging the people to keep the laws that God has given them. They made a commitment to God to do so and He has promised that if they do, He will elevate them above other nations. If the Jews keep their end of the bargain, they will be a special nation, holy to God. Nach Yomi: Esther 3

Esther – Chapter 3Esther – Chapter 3 Esther – Chapter 3 Yeah, That's a Lot of Silver. Five years after Esther’s elevation to the throne, Ahasuerus promoted Haman to be his “first officer.” (Haman was a descendant of Agag, king of Amalek, whose life was spared by King Saul in I Samuel 15, counter to G-d’s instruction.) The king commanded all of his other officers to bow before Haman, but Mordechai refused to do so. The other officers asked him why this was, since Mordechai was the same rank as they were. Eventually the matter was brought to Haman’s attention, in an effort to compel Mordechai to comply. Haman was livid and, since Mordechai’s insubordination was religiously motivated, he decided to eradicate not only Mordechai, but all his coreligionists. Haman had lots cast in order to choose a fortuitous time to carry out his evil plan. The lot fell on Adar, the last month of the lunar year. (This pleased Haman, as Moses, who led the Jews from Egypt, died in Adar. Haman thought this meant that the Jews were vulnerable at that time, but he was unaware that Moses was also born in Adar!) Haman told Ahasuerus that one of the many nationalities scattered throughout his empire were disloyal and could not be trusted. Since they served no purpose for the king, they should be eliminated. Haman was so keen to have this done that he offered to subsidize the project with 10,000 talents of silver from his own pocket. (Even according to the most conservative estimate, a talent was more than 75 pounds, though it could have been well over 100 pounds. No matter how you slice it, that’s a lot of silver!) The king told Haman to keep the money; he would pay for the project. Ahasuerus gave Haman his signet ring, with which he would seal orders, and empowered him to do as he saw fit. The royal scribes were summoned and Haman dictated to them how the Jews were to be exterminated on 13th day of Adar. This order included Jews of all ages, including women and infants, who are normally considered “non-combatants.” All of the Jews’ property was to be confiscated as the spoils of war. The document was written in the king’s name, translated into every language spoken in the empire, and sealed with the signet ring to make it official. The letter was distributed throughout the empire, so that the people would have ample opportunity to prepare themselves. (The document was drafted 11 months ahead of the scheduled event.) The order was publicized throughout the capital city of Shushan, much to the confusion of its citizenry, particularly the Jews. Haman and Ahasuerus, however, sat down to drink. NYT forChildren Events: Collaborative Map Project

Collaborative Map Project The Children’s Museum of the Arts is inviting young visitors to go globetrotting — using their fingers — in this group workshop, which heralds the museum’s forthcoming show “If You Lived Here, You’d Be Home,” an exploration of the intersection of cartography and art. Children will work together to create a mural-size world map, first outlining and then filling in details with collage materials. Inspired by the book “Maps,” by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielinska, the project will include introducing flora, fauna and spots of special interest to the map. http://ift.tt/1N3zKzc Aug. 28 from noon to 6 p.m.; Aug. 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Aug. 31 from noon to 5 p.m. At Children's Museum of the Arts 212-274-0986 103 Charlton Street, between Hudson and Greenwich Streets SoHo, Manhattan New York, NY 10013 via NYT forChildren Events http://ift.tt/1N3zKzc Put the internet to work for you.
