History Crash Course #8: Reunion

by Ken Spiro History Crash Course #8: Reunion To remedy the family animosity, Joseph sets the stage for a great test. An interesting thing happens in the Bible right in the middle of the Joseph story. Suddenly the story stops. We leave off Joseph and return to the land of Canaan to pick up the story of Judah, the fourth oldest of the 12 brothers and a natural leader in the family. And it is not immediately clear why we need to be informed of this slice out of Judah's life at this point in the narrative. (See Book of Genesis, Chapter 38.) We learn that Judah takes a wife who bears three sons and the oldest married a woman named Tamar. He died. In Jewish Law there is concept called yibum. If a man dies childless, it is a commandment that his brother should marry the widow so that she can have children and perpetuate his name. 1 Accordingly, the second son married Tamar. He also died. Tamar is in line to marry the third son, but Judah stalls fearing the same fate for his youngest son. Realizing Judah will not honor the law, and seeing herself growing older and childless, Tamar decides to take the matters into her own hands. As the Bible tells it, she disguises herself as a prostitute and waits for Judah to pass by. He promises her a goat in payment for her services. She holds onto his staff and seal as collateral, but when he arrives with the goat, the "prostitute" is nowhere to be found. Shortly thereafter, it is discovered that Tamar is pregnant and she is sentenced to death for her promiscuity. Despite her situation, she does not embarrass Judah by revealing that he is the father of her unborn child. Instead, she sends the staff and seal with the request, "Please, recognize to whom this belongs." These are the very words that Judah had spoken to his father Jacob, when -- after having sold Joseph into slavery -- he and his brothers took Joseph's coat and smeared it with the blood of a goat. They had claimed at the time that Joseph must have been devoured by wild animals. Through this parallel language Judah is given a hint from above that his leading role in the sale of his brother was a terrible mistake. Judah confesses, "She is more righteous than I." Through his admission of guilt, Judah becomes the first person in the Bible to accept responsibility willingly, thereby becoming the archetypal example of sincere and wholehearted repentance. In this he is the model Jewish leader, and the mantle of kingship will forever after belong to the tribe of Judah. His descendants (who come from his relationship with Tamar) will be King David and King Solomon, as well as the prophesied Messiah at the end of days.2 As unusual as the Judah and Tamar story is, the fact that it is even mentioned illustrates another unique aspect of the Bible. In general there is very little history recorded from this period of time and what little we have found is very far from what we today would call objective history. A good example would the record of the Kings of Mesopotamia. According to these records the genealogy of these kings goes back to the gods, and the kings themselves are usually portrayed as flawless ideal rulers. The Bible, on the other hand is unique for its objective and even hypercritical treatment of both the Jewish people and their leaders. Since the purpose of the Bible to educate, nothing is overlooked or whitewashed. There are no skeletons in the closet. They are all dragged out into the open for everyone to see. The Anglo-Jewish writer Israel Zangwill said it best: "The Bible is an anti-Semitic book. ‘Israel is the villain not the hero, of his own story.' Alone among epics, it is out for truth, not high heroics." 3 The stage is now set for the repentance of the brothers and their reunion with Joseph. THE FAMINE Meanwhile, the famine hits. And it doesn't just affect Egypt but the entire ancient Middle East, and Egypt -- thanks to Joseph's foresight -- is the only place that has storehouses of grain. Jacob sends the brothers in search of provisions. He keeps just one of his sons with him. Unaware that Joseph is still alive, Jacob fears for the safety of Benjamin, Joseph's full brother and the only surviving child of his favorite wife Rachel. The brothers arrive to Egypt. They bow before the Viceroy, not realizing that this is their long-lost brother whom they had sold into slavery. After all, when they sold him into slavery he was a boy of 17 and now he is almost 40 and dressed as the viceroy of Egypt. At this point in the narrative Joseph could easily have revealed himself but he doesn't. Instead he keeps his identity a secret and runs his brothers through one of the most interesting and emotional dramas in the entire Bible. Joseph recognized that his brothers' hatred had posed a mortal danger to him in the past and if left untreated an eternal danger to the Jewish people in the future. Unless they recognized their mistake, felt true remorse and changed, this hatred would resurface throughout history. He knew that he must force his brother s to do tshuva -- repentance. The great Medieval Jewish scholar Maimonides tells us that the Jewish way of repentance is that first you recognize that you've done wrong. Next you commit never to repeat the same mistake and finally, if you find yourself in the same situation, but you don't repeat that mistake. You show that you've really changed. This is exactly what his brothers must do and Joseph realizes that he now has a great chance to put his brothers back in the same situation in order to get them to both take responsibility for their past mistakes and root out the damage caused by their fraternal jealousy. THE TEST So first, he accuses them of being spies. They insist they are not spies, they are just brothers of a family, that they have a father and a brother back home. If that is true, says Joseph, go back and bring the other brother. They are now starting to figure out that this is all happening to them because of what they did to Joseph. And now they have to bring Benjamin -- they know that if something happens to him, it's going to kill their father. But Joseph insists and makes them go back and bring back Benjamin. Then he plants a silver cup in Benjamin's bag, and accuses them all of stealing. However, he offers to let the brothers go free and only punish Benjamin by taking him into slavery. This is the test -- will they turn their backs on their brother to save themselves? But they have become different people and they will not make the same mistake again. Judah argues passionately and offers himself into slavery in place of Benjamin.4 With that Joseph starts to cry and reveals his true identity at last: "I am Joseph, is my father still alive?" This is one of the great moments in the Bible as the brothers stare in shock at their long-lost brother, now an Egyptian Viceroy. DIVINE PLAN As the shock wears off, the first thought that Joseph's brothers probably have is "we're dead!" But Joseph has no thoughts of revenge and he makes what is clearly one of the most significant statements in terms of understanding Jewish history: "Now do not worry, and do not be angry with yourselves that you sold me here, for it was to preserve life that God sent me before you. For it is two years that there has been famine in the land; and for another five years there will be no plowing or harvest. God sent me here before you to insure your survival in the land to keep you alive for a great deliverance. It was not you that sent me here, but God and he made me as a father to Pharaoh and master of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt."(Genesis 45:5-8) One of the greatest sayings of the rabbis which explains Jewish history is the idea of "God puts the cure before the disease."5 At the beginning of these series, we discussed the idea of history as a controlled process leading to a destination. Our decisions make a difference but we're promised that we'll get our destined end. Therefore, regardless of what path we take, God will always make sure that His goals are met. He will put the pieces into place. Now as events are unfolding, we don't see where and how the pieces fit but when it's all over we can see everything had a reason. Joseph, who was a very intelligent person with a tremendous faith in God, realized that everything he went through in the past twenty two years, his enslavement, his rise to viceroy, was part of a Divine plan. He had to go to Egypt, because this was all part of this huge cosmic historical process that only became clear at the end of the story. JIGSAW PUZZLE Jewish history (and all human history) is like a giant jigsaw puzzle with six thousand pieces. When the pieces are first poured out on the table they make no sense. In the end we see that they all fit together perfectly. Nothing is missing and nothing is extra. Every piece has a purpose and a place. This is the Jewish take on history. Everything fits. There are no accidents. It all comes together. Every event has a purpose in God's infinite plan and when it's done we look back and see that it all makes sense, it all fits. Joseph sees that. He sends word back to his father, and Jacob is overjoyed. He thought his son has been dead for all these years. And they have a dramatic reunion. All of Egypt comes out to see the Viceroy's family. And they are all bowing to Joseph in fulfillment of the prophecy. Then the Pharaoh invites the whole family to come live in Egypt. And they do. The Bible says that 70 individuals entered Egypt consisting of Jacob, his 12 sons, their wives and children. The proto-Jewish nation arrived in Egypt. They're welcomed in. They're given the best real estate in the land of Goshen. They settle there happily and prosper. Everything seems to be going great until the Egyptians see they are doing a little too well for comfort. But when the Book of Genesis ends -- with the deaths of Jacob and Joseph -- everything is still okay. The problems are waiting to come in the Book of Exodus. 1. This law has many details that we won’t go into. The custom of Yibum is not practiced in the modern Jewish world. 2. See: Breishit Rabbah 85:5. 3. Gabriel Sivan, The Bible and Civilization (Jerusalem: Keter Publishing House, 1973), p.10. 4. It’s interesting to note that the Midrashim (Biblical exegesis) indicate that although the brothers were willing to fight for Benjamin, they also suspected that on some level he was a thief. It seems that by the time we reach the climax of the story the brothers had not totally worked out their hatred and mistrust, but Joseph could not hold himself back any longer. Maybe if Joseph had pushed them just a little harder, this hatred would have been purged forever and Jewish history could have taken a very different, and less painful, path. See: Midrash Rabbah, M’keitz 92:8 5. Talmud-Megillah 13:b. This article can be read on-line at: http://ift.tt/1HelZXx Click here to receive more inspiring articles like this. Shabbat Shalom Vayera -- How to be a good host ... and guest

Vayera 5776   Insights into life, personal growth and Torah. View online: http://ift.tt/1PT3QXh   Vayeira (Genesis 18-22) GOOD MORNING! Our Sages teach us that the actions of our forefathers Abraham (Avraham), Isaac (Yitzchak) and Jacob (Ya'akov) are signs for us. They are our role models. Avraham was the paradigm for hachansas orchim, hospitality. As a rule, the Torah is extremely concise, but in this section the Torah describes the small details of Avraham's behavior with his guests. Rabbi Yisroel Meir Kagan, the Chofetz Chaim, wrote that this is to teach us the importance of hospitality. Avraham was very old and had just undergone circumcision. Although he was in great pain, he nevertheless sat by the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day, hoping to see a sojourner whom he could invite to his home. We learn from this the fundamental principle of appreciating guests and inviting guests even when it is difficult. In Pirke Avos 1:5 we read, "The poor shall be members of your family." The Chofetz Chaim explains that there are those who do not invite guests into their homes with the excuse that they do not have special food or that their homes are too small. Our Sages therefore tell us that we should treat the poor as members of our own family and invite them under all circumstances. Most important, the host should serve his guest cheerfully. It is better to serve a guest vegetables with a smile, than to give him a steak with a frown! A host must greet his guest in a friendly manner and accord him honor. Also, a person should be careful not to contradict or correct his guest unnecessarily, for that may cause him anguish (Chesed L'Avraham 8:15, 8:17). When Avraham invited the three guests for a meal, he said "Let now be fetched a little water, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree" (Gen. 18:4). We learn from here the need to be sensitive to our guest's needs -- whether it be to wash up, a bed to rest or food. The Torah writes, "And I (Avraham) will fetch a morsel of bread and refresh your hearts" (Gen. 18:5). We learn from this to immediately offer some light refreshment to stay hunger until the meal can be prepared or served. Also, we see here Avraham's strategy to get his guests to stay if they did not want to bother him -- first he offered just a little bread; once they agreed to stay, he prepared an elaborate feast. (Rabbi Akiva Sofer in Daas Sofer, on this verse.) "And Avraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the lad (Ishmael), and he hurried to prepare it" (Gen. 18:7). The Chofetz Chaim writes that we learn from this verse that not only should one do chesed (kindness) oneself, but he should also educate and train his children to acts of kindness. (Ahavas Chesed, part 2, ch. 3). Even though Avraham had many servants and was suffering from his recent circumcision, nonetheless he exerted himself to fulfill the mitzvah of serving guests. We should learn from Avraham to do ourselves all that we can for our guests. (Me'am Lo'ez on this verse.) It is important to keep focus that one should perform acts of kindness for the benefit of the recipient, and not simply for the pleasure he himself derives from them! While we have obligations as a host, there are obligations upon the guest as well. A guest must be careful not to do anything that will annoy his host. A guest should not invite someone else to his host's home without the consent of the host A guest should not give any food from the table to the host's children without the host's permission A guest should be careful not to ask his host unnecessary personal questions about his business or belongings, or any other questions that might be unpleasant for his host to answer. A guest should appreciate that his host has spent time, money and effort on his behalf. He should always feel that every effort his host made was for the guest alone. A guest should show respect toward his host. He should also show that he cares about the host's children. Following his stay, a guest should write a letter to his host expressing his gratitude. A guest should not make a nuisance of himself by staying too long or by coming too often. (the above excerpted from Love Your Neighbor by Rabbi Zelig Pliskin)   Hear classes on... How to be a Host... and a Guest Download to Go or Listen FREE On-Line   Vayera, Genesis 18:1 - 22:24 Avraham, on the third day after his brit mila, sits outside his tent looking for guests to extend his hospitality. While talking with the Almighty, he sees three visitors (actually angels of the Almighty). Avraham interrupts his conversation with the Almighty to invite them to a meal. One angel informs him that in a year's time, Sarah, his wife, will give birth to a son, Yitzhak (Isaac). God tells Avraham that He is going to destroy Sodom because of its absolute evil (the city is the source of the word sodomy). Avraham argues with God to spare Sodom if there can be found ten righteous people in Sodom. Avraham loses for the lack of a quorum. Lot (Avraham's nephew) escapes the destruction with his two daughters. Other incidents: Avimelech, King of the Philistines, wants to marry Sarah (Avraham's wife), the birth of Yitzhak, the eviction of Hagar (Avraham's concubine) and Ishmael. Avimelech and Avraham make a treaty at Beersheva. Avraham is commanded to take up his son, Isaac, as an offering "on one of the mountains" (Akeidat Yitzhak). Lastly, the announcement of the birth of Rivka (Rebecca), the future wife of Yitzhak. Do you want to know the reward for listening to the command of the Almighty? This is what the Almighty told Avraham: "... I shall surely bless you and greatly increase your descendants like the stars of the heavens and like the sand on the seashore; and your offspring shall inherit the gate of its enemy. And all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your offspring, because you have listened to My voice." * * * Dvar Torahbased on Twerski on Chumash by Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, M.D. The Torah relates that when the matriarch, Sarah, was told that she would bear a child at the age of 90, she laughed "inwardly," thinking, "How can I bear a child at my old age?" God then said to Avraham, "Why did Sarah laugh? Is there anything that is beyond God?" Avraham reprimanded Sarah, but "Sarah denied, saying 'I did not laugh' for she was frightened." Avraham then said to her, "No, you laughed indeed" (Gen. 18:12-14). The Rabbi of Gur says that it is impossible to think that Sarah lied. The Midrash tells us that Sarah was totally free of sin (Bereishis Rabbah 58:1). He, therefore, interprets the verse as saying not that Sarah denied, but that Sarah was in denial. Her disbelief that she could carry a child was "inward" -- deep in the recesses of her subconscious. Sarah was not even aware of this thought. Only God Who knows a person's innermost thoughts and feelings, was aware of it. When Avraham reprimanded her for this thought, Sarah could not even imagine that she could have harbored disbelief of God's omnipotence. Her reverence of God was so great that a thought such as this was beyond her. The verse thus reads, "Sarah was in denial because she was so God-fearing." Sarah was certain that she was speaking the truth when she said, "I did not laugh." Sarah did not deny or lie. She had no access to her subconscious. If a person cannot be aware that he is in denial, how can we protect ourselves from being blind to reality? There is one way -- by listening to teachers and sincere friends who are objective and can see that which we cannot see.

Aish.com Daily - 15 Cheshvan

Daily Email Form   Torah Reading: Vayeira 15 Cheshvan 5776 / October 28, 2015     DAILY LIFT TODAY IN JEWISH HISTORY GROWING EACH DAY ASK THE RABBI QUOTE PHOTO Print Entire Mailing #512   It's the Effort that Counts Print Version » Rabbi Yeruchem Levovitz used to say, "Who is the righteous person and who is the evil person? Many people think the righteous person is one who does not transgress, and the evil person is one who constantly transgresses. But even the very righteous also transgress and even the very wicked perform good deeds. "The essential difference between the two is that the righteous person tries to overcome his desire to do wrong, while the evil person does not." (Alai Shur, vol.1, p.186; Rabbi Pliskin's Gateway to Happiness, p.222) See Rabbi Pliskin's new book "Self-Confidence" Cheshvan 15 Print Version » Yahrtzeit of Matityahu, the leader of the Maccabees in their fight against the Syrian-Greeks, as recorded in the Chanukah story. Matityahu bravely resisted the attempts to spread secular-Hellenist culture throughout the Land of Israel, and with his five sons, started an uprising. The revolt continued after Matityahu's death in 139 BCE, and successfully concluded with the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days. Cheshvan 15 is also the yahrtzeit of Rabbi Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz (1878-1953), known by the appellation "Chazon Ish." A brilliant scholar, he moved from Vilna to Israel in 1933, where he was regarded as the worldwide authority on all matters relating to Jewish law and life. Cheshvan 15 Print Version » If a person has a worry in his heart, let him relate it to others (Proverbs 12:25, Yoma 75a). Many people are hesitant to share their painful feelings with others. They may not wish to burden others with their problems, or they may be too ashamed to reveal their thoughts and feelings. The Scriptures and Talmud advocate the value of ventilating problems. Rabbi Elimelech of Lizensk stated: "One should regularly relate to one's mentor or to a trusted friend all the improper thoughts and feelings one has experienced ... and this is an incomparable technique (for proper conduct)." The value of sharing our troublesome thoughts, feelings, and actions with another person is inestimable. First, by not repressing our true feelings, we become more honest with ourselves. Second, by elucidating our problems with someone else, we may gain greater insight into them and even discover their solutions. Third, by considering our problem from a non-biased perspective, the listener can give an opinion far more objective than we could ever formulate on our own. Rabbi Elimelech recommends that such sharing be done regularly. Troublesome thoughts and feelings should not be allowed to accumulate. Not only can they add up to become overwhelming, they can also fester, become even more serious, and therefore be more difficult to eliminate. Today I shall ... find someone whom I can trust with my most private thoughts and feelings, and relieve myself of the burdensome baggage I have been carrying.See more books by Rabbi Abraham Twerski at Artscroll.com   Cheshvan 15 Print Version » Overcoming Hatred I've been thinking a lot about all the strife in this world - between individuals, between countries, between races. I understand that hatred occurs when there is hostility between two people, and neither have a desire to see the positive in each other and build a friendship. Surely, given the vast range of different personalities around, people will come across others with whom they simply do not get along, and if they try to associate with them, the hatred will just build. Isn't it better to just agree to differ and avoid contact with them? The Aish Rabbi Replies: The Torah says: "If you see the donkey of someone you hate lying under its load, you must help him unload it" (Exodus 23:5). While the verse addresses alleviating the pain of an animal, it also presents another issue: Helping someone you "hate" unload his donkey. We see from here that the way to overcome hatred is to help the other person, care for them, and give to them. When I give to someone, I invest a piece of myself, and therefore we become bonded. Of course, if your hatred is greater than your ability to be patient and giving, and the interaction will end in a fight, then it's better left alone. But if you are capable of overcoming the challenge, then it's good to put yourself in a situation where you are forced to help the object of your dislike. Otherwise, hatred left alone will just fester, waiting to explode. And is that really the type of world we want to live in? Aish.com Daily - 16 Cheshvan

Daily Email Form   Torah Reading: Vayeira 16 Cheshvan 5776 / October 29, 2015     DAILY LIFT TODAY IN JEWISH HISTORY GROWING EACH DAY ASK THE RABBI QUOTE PHOTO Print Entire Mailing #513   Serene Time Management Print Version » Serene time management is a balance between two extremes. Some people are overly lax about time. They tend to come late even for important meetings. Others are overly concerned about being on time. They dread being late for anything and this creates a heightened level of tension whenever they must be on time or complete a task by a specific deadline. Those who are lax about being on time create stress for others. Those who are overly concerned about being exactly on time often create stress for themselves when circumstances beyond their control prevent them from being on time. The ideal to strive for is to remain serene, yet consider it important to be on time and to finish tasks and projects by the time that you or others designate for them. (From Rabbi Pliskin's book, Serenity, p.70) See Rabbi Pliskin's new book "Self-Confidence" Cheshvan 16 Print Version » Yahrtzeit of Rabbi Elazar M. Shach (1900-2001), dean of the famed Ponevitch Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. People came from far and wide to hear his talmudic discourses and spiritual guidance; he also served as advisor of the Degel HaTorah political party. Over 100,000 people attended his funeral.           Cheshvan 16 is also the night of Kristallnacht ("Night of the Broken Glass") in 1938, when Nazis destroyed almost all of the 1,600 synagogues in Germany, as well as thousands of Jewish businesses and homes. Similar violence was carried out in Austria. Kristallnacht ushered in a new phase of anti-Semitic decrees, and was for many the first major warning sign of what would become the Holocaust. Cheshvan 16 Print Version » It is a Divine kindness that His mercies are endless (Lamentations 3:22). Another way to translate this verse is, "It is a Divine kindness that we are never finished." The Maggid of Koznitz was extremely frail and sickly as a child. It was not thought that he would survive to adulthood. Much of his life was spent sick in bed, and he was so weak that he was often unable to sit up to meet visitors. Still, he lived to an advanced age. The Maggid once revealed the secret of his longevity. "I never allowed myself to be without an assignment or a task to perform," he said. "People are taken from this world only when their missions here are completed. Whenever I was just about to finish one task, I would start another; hence, I could not be removed from this world if my assignment was not completed." Even from a purely physiological aspect, the Maggid's concept is valid. Some think that the healthiest thing for us is rest and relaxation. Not so. In reality, unused muscles tend to atrophy, while muscles that are exercised and stimulated are strengthened. The same principle applies to the entire person. If we constantly stimulate ourselves to achieve new goals, we avoid the apathy that leads to atrophy. Today I shall ... try to take on a new spiritual goal, and stimulate myself to greater achievement in serving God and being of help to other people.See more books by Rabbi Abraham Twerski at Artscroll.com   Cheshvan 16 Print Version » The Number 30 I am turning 30 in a few weeks, and I'm wondering if the number 30 has any significance in Judaism? The Aish Rabbi Replies: It certainly does! The Talmud says that 30 is the age when we reach the prime of our energy (Avot 5:21). Also, royalty is attained through 30 requisites (Avot 6:5). The lunar month is a few hours less than thirty days. Also, there are numerous laws attached to the number 30: A Nazir vow, when not specified for how long, is for 30 days. A Kohen serving in the Holy Temple should have a haircut every 30 days. Pidyon HaBen, redemption of the first-born, is after 30 days. (Numbers 18:16) So happy birthday - and may you fulfill the prime of your energy! Cheshvan 16 Cheshvan 16 Rebecca Kowalsky’s photo of the remains of the Southern Wall by the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Dating back to the Second Temple, this section of the wall was first discovered in the late 19th century, with ongoing excavations to this day.   Featured at Aish.com       The Top 17 Pieces of Marital Advice   Har Nof Rabbi Dies of Wounds   The Rabid Anti-Semite who became a Proud Jew     Follow us on Facebook What do you think of this email? The Presidential Daily Brief - 10/29/2015

October 29, 2015 Follow Us: Presented by     Important     Presidential candidates Sen. Marco Rubio, Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and Sen. Ted Cruz engaged in a heated debate last night on CNBC. Source: Getty Fired Up Republicans Target One Another, Media Experience trumped outsiders last night. After pointed barbs between the candidates, Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio scored big cheers by taking aim at CNBC's debate moderators, with Cruz declaring "this is not a cage match." Nearly every candidate squeezed in a zinger at the expense of their visibly shaken moderators. But pundits clapped loudest for Florida Senator Rubio, calling it the strongest night of his campaign, compared to Ben "Quiet Man" Carson, a somewhat understated Donald Trump and a lackluster Jeb Bush - all signs that political fortunes may be turning as volatility flares. Sources: NYT, FT (sub), Washington Post Share: Kerry: World Leaders Must Navigate Syria Out of 'Hell' It'll be a devil of a time. The U.S. secretary of state is heading to Vienna for talks about Syria, where he says foreign leaders must "chart a course out of hell." Today's talks see Russia, the U.S., France, Germany, Britain, Saudi Arabia and notably Iran, among others, come together to discuss Assad's fate and how to best end the Syrian civil war. With Russian and U.S.-led planes circling over Syria, risking a bigger blowup, the talks signal a determination to hear all sides of the argument and restore the peace. Sources: BBC, NYT Share: Fed Holds Rates Steady, Hints at December Move Ho ho ho. While the Federal Reserve meeting yesterday resulted in no change to short-term interest rates, investors have been put on alert just in time for the holidays. Central bankers kept their benchmark near zero but explicitly warned that they'll consider a lift at their final 2015 meeting in December. Many analysts, citing global economic concerns and low inflation, had predicted that a hike would have to wait until next year. But the Fed eased its warning about international woes hurting the U.S. economy, meaning Santa may deliver higher rates. Sources: FT (sub), The Guardian Share: Nepal Elects First Female President Ladies are standing a bit taller there today. Long-time women's rights campaigner Bidhya Devi Bhandari has been elected the Himalayan nation's first female president. The Communist Party's deputy leader, 54, lobbied hard for the new constitution, adopted last month, which requires that either the president or vice president be a woman. The new framework also demands that a third of Nepal's lawmakers be female. Heralding the 327-214 parliamentary vote in her favor, Bhandari says her ascension is the first step toward ensuring Nepal's new guarantee of equality. Anonymous also falsely accused a police officer who had never been to Ferguson, Missouri, of shooting Brown. The European Rosetta spacecraft has found oxygen molecules in the cloud surrounding a comet. Since most of Earth's oxygen arises from biological processes, it was assumed it couldn't hitch rides on debris from the birth of our solar system. But this finding suggests a gentler process that enabled the comets to retain their oxygen, and forces physicists to consider that it may be time to rethink their standard wisdom about the system's formation. Others, meanwhile, wonder whether comets can produce biosignatures of life all by themselves. Sources: Mashable , Discovery Share: SXSW Considers Day-Long Anti-Harassment Event They don't want a fight. Earlier this week, the celebrated tech and cultural festival caused an uproar when it decided to cancel two discussion panels on harassment and abuse in gaming. SXSW was widely seen as kowtowing to powerful tech geeks in the Gamergate controversy who resent claims that games demean women. That resulting backlash, combined with threats by Buzzfeed and Vox to pull out, seems to have kicked the festival into damage control mode. Now organizers are talking about reinstating a panel and possibly holding a day-long discussion on harassment. Sources: Fortune, Fast Company Share: Elusive Harry Potter Play Tickets Frustrate Fans They lost that magic feeling. The kid wizard is returning in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at London's Palace Theatre, and devotees had to pre-register online and wait in a "pre-queue" for hours yesterday for a chance to buy priority booking seats. But this caused a virtual pileup of more than 18,000, many of whom experienced technical hiccups. Those preview seats quickly sold out - resellers are flogging them for 10 times the original price - so fans should probably grab their wands to conjure up seats as general ticket sales begin tomorrow.
