Self-Forgetting
Self-Forgetting Rosh Hashanah is the time to set ourselves aside and focus only on G-d, on helping to reveal G-d’s Kingship in the world. A Sacred Time Elul #6 Self-ForgettingDuring Elul, we learn to trust in G-d’s mercy and acceptance. While the days of judgment are on the way, now is the time to focus on the fact that G-d will help us change and draw closer to Him. This kind of trust itself mitigates the force of Divine judgment that affects the whole world. The childless Shunamite woman hosted the prophet Elisha in her home and provided for him whenever he passed through. Yet, when Elisha offered to pray on her behalf for any personal request on the Day of Judgment, she replied simply, “I dwell among my people.” Meaning, please don’t single me out even with the best of intentions. The best way for me to pass through these days of judgment is without focusing on myself. I’m part of something bigger than just myself and my personal needs. The Zohar teaches an important lesson from this. Rosh Hashanah is the time to set ourselves aside and focus only on G-d, on helping to reveal G-d’s Kingship in the world. Like the Shunamite woman, we are only part of the collective soul of the Jewish people, declaring G-d the King. And even though Elisha did not pray for her, she had a child that year. The way to blessing is through self-forgetting. As a loyal subjects of the King, I am sure to be provided with whatever I need to serve Him best.
